A patio in the material that suits the yard

The family builds patios and walkways in 4 materials: concrete pavers, travertine, poured concrete and natural stone. All four are on the old site’s list, and the backyards in this portfolio use every one of them. The right one depends on the house, how the patio will be used, and what is around it.

Everything else that goes out back

A patio is rarely the whole job. Seating walls, a fire pit, a built-in barbecue, a fence or a retaining wall can all be part of the same contract, and so can a deck or a pergola. Toni Y wrote on Houzz in March 2021 that the family transformed their “lunar landscape” of a backyard, and called Gary straight-forward, organized and very responsive along the way.

Built around what is already there

Some things in a yard are worth keeping. On one job a hardwood deck went around a mature tree instead of taking it down. On another, a pergola dining terrace was set right at the edge of the pool so the two read as one space. Gary starts with what the yard has, then fills in what it needs.

One bid for the whole backyard

Gary walks the yard, listens to how you want to use it, and writes one bid that covers tearing out the old, the materials and the labor. If the yard has a pool, the deck can be part of the same job; see pool deck remodels. For a kitchen, a fireplace or a fire table, see outdoor kitchens and fire features. The family takes backyard work across Nashville and the 24 towns within 30 miles of it, Franklin, Mt. Juliet and Murfreesboro among them.

Backyard Patios & Remodels: questions people ask

How much does a patio remodel cost?

The size of the patio and the surface you pick set most of the price: pavers, travertine, poured concrete and natural stone all cost differently to buy and to lay. Seating walls, a fire pit or a built-in grill add to it. Gary walks the yard first, then puts all of it in a written bid.

Which patio material is best: pavers, travertine, concrete or natural stone?

Each one suits a different yard. Pavers come in the widest range of shapes and can be relaid if the ground moves. Travertine has a soft, natural face. Poured concrete gives clean, large panels. Natural stone looks the most like it has always been there. The family builds with all four.

Can you build a deck and a patio in the same backyard?

Yes, and several jobs on this site pair the two, with a deck stepping down to a paver lounge under a pergola. A deck suits a slope or a raised back door; a patio suits level ground. Gary plans the two together so the levels and drainage work as one.

What else can go into a backyard remodel besides a patio?

The old site lists custom seating, fire pits, built-in barbecues, retaining walls and fences, and the Houzz profile adds pergolas, decks, outdoor kitchens and outdoor lighting. Most of the backyards on this page combine several of those. Tell Gary what you want to do out there, and he will suggest what to build.

Why does water pool on my patio after it rains?

Standing water means the slope or the base under the patio is wrong, and it rarely fixes itself. Andy Slater saw his new pavers drain badly in heavy rain months after the job; he wrote on Houzz that Gary came back and corrected it. If your patio holds water now, say so on the form.
