Outdoor kitchens, fireplaces and fire pits
The pieces that turn a patio into a place to cook, eat and stay out after dark.
What the family builds
The old site lists 4 outdoor elements: outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, putting greens and pergolas. The family’s Houzz profile adds outdoor kitchens and outdoor lighting, and one of the 3 five-star reviews there describes lights put in throughout a backyard. In the portfolio that runs from a stone kitchen under string lights to the covered room with a fireplace and a TV wall in the photos below.
Outdoor kitchens
A kitchen outside starts with the cooking and works outward: the grill and where it sits, counter space on either side, then storage, a sink, a bar or a refrigerator if you want them. Gas, water and power have to reach it, which is why a kitchen is easiest to plan along with the patio around it rather than added afterward. One job set a kamado grill into an island on pavers; another put a wood-slat screen behind the counter.
Fire pits, fire tables and fireplaces
A fire table on a patio pulls people into a circle. An outdoor fireplace gives a covered room a wall to face, the way a living room has one. Both need decisions about fuel, clearance and where the seating goes, and both are easiest to place before the patio is laid.
Pergolas, lighting and putting greens
A pergola gives shade and a frame for lights over a lounge or a dining table. Lighting makes the yard usable after dark, and it is what makes the dusk photos on this site look the way they do. Putting greens are the odd one out on the list, and the family builds those too. All of it can be one job with a backyard remodel, anywhere from Spring Hill in the south to Springfield in the north.

Outdoor Kitchens & Fire Features: questions people ask
How much does an outdoor kitchen cost?
The price follows what goes into it: the length of the counter, the stone or tile on it, the grill and appliances you choose, and whether gas, water and power have to be run to it. Gary prices it after seeing where it will go, and the bid lists those pieces in writing.
What goes into an outdoor kitchen?
At least a grill set into a counter with room to work on either side. The kitchens in the portfolio go further: a stone kitchen under string lights, a kamado grill set into an island on pavers, a stainless kitchen, and a lit stone bar beneath a wood ceiling. Tell Gary how you cook.
Should I build a fire pit or an outdoor fireplace?
A fire pit or fire table is for sitting around in a circle, and it fits on most patios. An outdoor fireplace is a wall people face, and it gives a covered room a focal point, like the fireplace and TV wall in the photos below. Many yards have room for both.
Can you build a pergola over an existing patio?
Often, yes. A pergola needs solid footings for its posts, so Gary checks what is under the patio before saying how it will be anchored. The family has built wood pergolas over lounges and dining terraces and louvered covers over kitchens, several of which are pictured in the portfolio.
Do you install outdoor lighting and putting greens?
Yes, both. Outdoor lighting installation is listed on the family’s Houzz profile, and one Houzz reviewer’s backyard got lights throughout as part of the job. Putting greens are on the old site’s list of outdoor elements, alongside outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and pergolas. Ask Gary about either one at the walk-through.
