4 surfaces for a pool deck

The old site lists the options for a pool deck remodel as tile, natural stone, pavers or travertine, with synthetic lawn beside them. Every pool is a different shape, so whichever surface you choose is cut to the edge of yours. The pools pictured on this page include a travertine deck with a spa, a paver deck with a water feature, and a deck under a shade canopy.

Old deck out, or a new surface over it

Not every pool deck has to be demolished. Where the concrete underneath is sound and slopes away from the water, a new surface can often go over it. Where it has cracked, lifted or tipped toward the pool, it has to come out first. That call is made on site, and the bid says which, along with the removal, materials and labor.

Fire, water and shade

A deck rebuild is the moment to add anything that runs underneath. In one of the photos below, a fire table sits right beside the water. The gas line for a fire table, the plumbing for a water wall and the footings for a shade structure are all simpler to put in while the deck is open than to cut in later.

The rest of the pool yard

Lounges, a dining table under a pergola and a patch of lawn often sit just past the deck; see backyard patios and remodels and outdoor kitchens and fire features. Gary takes on pool decks anywhere within 30 miles of Nashville, from Belle Meade out to Lebanon, and each one starts with him looking at the pool before he prices it.

Pool Deck Remodels: questions people ask

How much does a pool deck remodel cost?

It depends on the deck’s square footage, whether the old surface has to come out, the coping, and the material: tile, natural stone, pavers and travertine all price differently. Gary sees the pool before pricing it, and the written bid includes removal of the old deck as well as materials and labor.

What is the best surface for a pool deck?

Travertine and pavers are the two most common choices for a pool deck. Travertine stays comfortable underfoot and has a soft, natural look; pavers come in more colors and can be lifted for repairs. Tile and natural stone suit a more formal pool. The decks on this page use all four.

Can you resurface a pool deck without tearing it out?

Sometimes. If the concrete under the deck is sound and drains away from the pool, pavers or travertine can often go over it. If it is cracked, heaving or tilted toward the water, it has to come out first. Gary decides which after looking at the deck, and the bid says which.

Can you add a fire feature or water feature to a pool deck?

Yes. Two of the pools in these photos have them: one has a fire table on an island in the pool, another has a water feature at the edge of a paver deck. A fire table or water wall is easiest to plan while the deck is being rebuilt, since the gas and water lines run underneath.

Can synthetic lawn go next to a pool?

Yes. Synthetic lawn is one of the surfaces the old site lists for pool deck remodels, and it keeps grass clippings and mud out of the water. It stays green without watering or mowing, and Gary can lay it wherever a strip of real lawn would otherwise go beside the deck.
